Greetings from BestFlashDrives.com. We've been waiting a long time to announce something like this, and today it's finally time - a major PC maker, HP, announced on Wednesday that it is launching a new laptop that will be equipped with USB 3.0.
Let's hope this marks the day that this new super-fast USB protocol finally goes mainstream and becomes available to us, the eagerly awaiting masses (we've been waiting for a good year or two for this!).
What's the the big deal?
Well, next time you sync your iPod to your computer, or download video or pictures from your camcorder or camera to your computer, or back-up files to a USB drive or external hard drive - any USB transfer, and you're waiting FOREVER for it to finish, just imagine it going twice as fast. Pretty good right? That would really improve your life.
Okay, now imagine it going 5 times faster. That would be incredible, wouldn't it? An exponential improvement that would save you mountains of time. We're still not done yet - try having this go TEN TIMES FASTER. That's right, USB 3.0 improves data transfer by a factor of 10 compared to USB 2.0.
USB 3.0 can transfer data at 5 Gbps, compared to only 480 Mbps for the currently ruling protocol, USB 2.0.
Firewire and the other faster connection protocols never really took hold in the market, and we cried a river over that one, but this USB 3.0 looks like it will actually take off. We'll need more computer manufacturers like HP to start including it in their machines, and Asus has already done so and Fujitsu and other manufacturers are hot on their heels.
Then hopefully the device manufacturers will jump in and upgrade their stuff to USB 3.0 (including our USB flash drive factories), and pretty soon the USB 2.0 will be a thing of the past, just like your old Motorola StarTac cellphone (the one in the drawer where you keep all that old stuff, remember?).
